New fund requirements for a study permit
As of September 1, 2025, international students in Canada will now need to show an additional $2,260 CAD to be eligible for a study permit—bringing the total up to $22,895 CAD for a single applicant.

📢 Important Update on GIC Requirement for Canada (SDS Program)
Effective September 1, 2025, the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) amount for international students applying for a study permit under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been updated to CAD 22,895.
This mandatory amount is set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to ensure students have sufficient funds to cover their initial living expenses while studying in Canada.
In 2023, IRCC introduced category-based Express Entry draws to attract candidates with in-demand skills across priority sectors.
According to ATIP data, the planned allocation of ITAs for 2025 is as follows:

On August 21, Prince Edward Island (PEI) invited foreign nationals to apply for provincial nomination under its PNP.
This round primarily targeted candidates who are currently residing and employed in PEI within high-demand sectors and special consideration given to international graduates from designated universities and colleges. With this latest draw, the province has now issued a total of 792 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in 2025. The PEI Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) issued 132 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates already in the province, under the Labour Impact and PEI Express Entry streams
A new language test will count toward Canadian PR applications.
Foreign nationals planning to immigrate to Canada will soon have an additional option to demonstrate their English language proficiency. (IRCC) has announced that it will begin accepting the TOEFL Essentials Test as proof of English skills. With this update, applicants under Canada’s permanent economic immigration programs will be able to use the TOEFL Essentials Test as an alternative to other approved language tests.
Manitoba issues new invitations to skilled workers in latest PNP draw
This week, Manitoba conducted its second immigration draw for August under the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). Candidates were selected based on factors such as skilled work experience, assessment scores, and participation in strategic recruitment initiatives. The province has now completed its 17th immigration draw of 2025. In total, 77 Letters of Advice to Apply were distributed, with 18 going to applicants linked to the Express Entry system and holding a valid job seeker validation code.
IRCC conducts new Express Entry draw for healthcare and social services workers
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has invited another group of candidates to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system. In this round, 2,500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued to candidates in the healthcare and social services occupation category. To qualify, applicants were required to have a minimum CRS score of 470 and must have submitted their Express Entry profile before April 23, 2025.
